Mimi Fong, my ex-coworker, wrote her experience of the 20th annual Calibre Awards for ArkitecTrue. The event took place in Century City, California on April 4, 2008. I congratulate all the winners, and the nominees. And thanks Mimi for the article…
“First time this year Calibre Awards was hosted at the Century Plaza Hotel, Century City, California which is right next to my work. Previously it was held in Beverly Hills. I was invited by Humanscale and went with an ex-coworker who works at HOK.
The official award show started at 7:30. Before the show guests hang out at the bar or various parties that was held almost everywhere. I went to Haworth and Tangram pre-show parties, and both were very crowded. They rented the suites in the Hotel and guests had an opportunity to meet and socialize. It was a great way to kick off the evening. I had a chance to meet a lot of designers and sales representatives. Because it was my first time to be in the Calibre Awards, I was a bit overwhelmed. It was the same for my girlfriend as well. Most of the people got confused because the award show was never held in this location before. We all got lost, and confused together, still I was having fun!!!
We were supposed to find our seats before the award started. In order to do that, we had to go to the banquet room, got our tickets, and then be seated. But it was our first time in the hotel, and we didn’t know where to get the tickets. More confusion, right! Finally we got to the banquet and got our tickets and went inside…
It was a nice setting, at least at a first glance. However when the dinner started, I realized we had to eat in the dark. There was no light while we were eating, not even candles, as seen above! The good thing was we only had to eat in the dark when they were doing the award show. During the main course, we got to see the light because they were filming the show.
Felderman Keatinge Associates, the company I worked for, was nominated for two projects. One was for category “Office (25,000-75,000 sqft)” ‘Oversee‘, which is an internet company. The other one was “Office (under 25,000 sqft)”, ‘Barnes, Morris, Klein, Mark, Yorn, Barnes & Levine LLP‘, which is an entertainment lawyer’s office. We won the Barnes and Morris, but lost the other one.
Over all, it was a good experience. I was hoping to see some celebrities, but no luck! I hope they can plan it out better next year. See you there next year!”
