Architecture: Designs for Living: State of the Art in Emergency Department Design

The theme Architecture: Designs for Living is intended to represent the broad range of building typologies that shape our communities and urban design that defines our city. The theme is also envisioned as our response to the Mayor’s PlaNYC, which anticipates the need for sustainable growth to accommodate one million new residents. This is the fifth of 12 monthly programs by AIA New York Chapter committees that will explore current design directions that will formthe “building blocks” for new growth envisioned by PlaNYC.
A panel of four architects with expertise in the design of Emergency Department design will present their recently built projects, highlighting their approach to design, problem solving, and fulfilling the mission of emergency response for their clients.

Jeffrey Brand, AIA, Principal/Perkins Eastman Duke University Emergency Department As a first step in the implementation of a major facilities modernization, this expansion will almost double the existing department, accommodating 95,000 visits as a Level 1 Trauma Center.
Norman Rosenfeld, FAIA, FACHA, Consulting Principal, Stonehill &Taylor New York Downtown Hospital, Lehman Brothers Emergency Center The Department, completed in 2007, has 39 treatment positions, 29,000 square feet of new and renovated space, and was a multiphase project maintaining service throughout the construction.
Rob Rothblatt, AIA, Associate Director/Skidmore, Owings & Merrill King’s County Hospital Center Modernization, Phase Two This project, completed in May 2006, pulled together diagnostic and treatment services previously scattered among five or six buildings. Designed at the time of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the ED Design was adapted to include several provisions for large scale civic medical protection and response.
Joan Saba, AIA, FACHA, Partner/NBBJ Emergency Department Expansion and Renovation, Massachusetts General Hospital MGH undertook the transformation of its Emergency Department with the goals of increasing capacity, streamlining workflow, improving the environment of care for patients, creating supportive space for families, preparing for mass casualties and improving ambulance access.

Cook + Fox Architects Discuss Gut Renovation Project

As a firm, Cook + Fox Architects is committed to pursuing excellence in green design through the construction of not only new and innovative buildings in the city, but also through the rehabilitation and upgrade of existing buildings. Kristen Johnson and Ruth Gyuse from Cook + Fox Architects will be presenting a gut rehabilitation project, scheduled for completion in July 2008, and pending LEED Gold certification. The presentation will cover all aspects of design and construction as it relates to LEED and sustainable design, focusing specifically on the advantages and challenge of reusing existing buildings, the importance of small but consistent moves to reduce energy consumption and material waste, and lessons learned from attempting the LEED process. This session will be an informal presentation followed by a discussion.
