When you say Switzerland, the first thing that will come to my mind is the Alps, beside the chocolate, watches, and the banks of course! Now here is the bad news… The Zermatt Mountain Cableways are planning a pyramid of glass and steel on the Klein Matterhorn with an observation platform at 4,000 metres above sea level, 117 metres above the actual summit (3,883 metres above sea level). And why do they do that? To attract more visitors. I think this is such a disaster, leave the Alps alone! They are a symbol of Switzerland…
I am not alone with my anger. Most of the environmentalists are also angry about this sudden trend to build taller and taller hotels close to the ski slopes because they are worried that transporting building materials to such heights may disturb the habitat and could potentially change the nature of the mountains.
“Man has always strived to reach the realms of the universe and to have magical experiences,” artist Heinz Julen is convinced. “This project is a small step in that direction.” The Matterhorn glacier paradise is set to become the pinnacle of great dreams – a place for people to pay homage to the world of mountains, a spiritual dimension.
“Even in terms of its infrastructure and architecture, the Matterhorn glacier paradise is set to do justice to its superlatives and its uniqueness,” believes Christen Baumann, CEO of Zermatt Mountain Cableways. “It will to become yet another Swiss trademark that will complement the existing comprehensive offering.”
