Designing spaces that are both functional and sustainable is a crucial aspect of architecture. However, it is not the only aspect of architecture that requires attention to detail and a deep understanding of the built environment. As an architect, I have had the privilege of working on various projects, from designing buildings to creating interior spaces. One of the key aspects of my job is to ensure that the design meets the client’s needs and expectations. To achieve this, I use various tools and techniques, including detailed plans, sections, and construction callouts to increase client understanding.

One of the most significant challenges I faced as an architect was designing an interior space for a client who wanted to incorporate sustainability standards and WELL checklist. The WELL checklist is a comprehensive set of guidelines that ensures the indoor air quality, water quality, and the overall health and well-being of occupants. To verify that the design met the WELL checklist, I conducted thorough research and analysis of the building’s systems and materials. I also worked closely with the client to understand their needs and expectations, ensuring that the design met their requirements.

Presenting Designs and Communicating Progress

As an architect, one of the most important aspects of my job is to communicate effectively with clients. To achieve this, I prepared presentations that effectively communicated our project’s progress and outcomes for client meetings. I used visual aids, such as diagrams and charts, to help clients understand the design and its features. I also made sure to highlight the benefits of the design, such as energy efficiency and cost savings.

Designing Alternative Options

I also created alternative design options to show clients, which allowed them to visualize different design possibilities. This not only helped clients make informed decisions but also allowed me to test and refine the design. For example, I created a design option that incorporated a green roof, which was met with enthusiasm by the client. The green roof not only provided insulation but also created a natural habitat for local wildlife.

Awards and Recognition

I was also involved in designing the presentation for the Rosebery Ave. design competition, which was a high-profile event. To ensure that the presentation aligned with the design brief, I conducted thorough research and analysis of the competition’s guidelines. I also worked closely with the client to ensure that the design met their needs and expectations. The presentation was met with critical acclaim and won several awards.

Organizational Skills and Time Management

As an architect, I have to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. To achieve this, I exhibited strong organizational skills in coordinating tasks and meeting deadlines. I used tools such as Gantt charts and project management software to stay organized and on track. I also made sure to communicate regularly with team members and clients to ensure that everyone was on the same page.

Working as a Lifeguard

I also had the opportunity to work as a lifeguard at the YMCA Child Development Center in Waterloo, IL. As a lifeguard, I had to be vigilant and respond quickly to distress situations. I enforced pool regulations and policies, and delivered basic life support in emergency situations, including administering CPR to stabilize individuals prior to ambulance arrival. I also coached, mentored, and developed athletes with encouragement, motivation, and nutritional advice to enhance performance and overall well-being.

Teaching Swimming Lessons

I coordinated and taught swimming lessons to children aged 1 to 10 years. I led instructional classes to protect recreational users from dangerous situations. I also handled student/athlete situations using logic and mediation skills. I maintained pool and team equipment, including frequent inspections and minor repairs.
