The building, which has been vacant since 1978, is currently under consideration for rehabilitation. ## Introduction to the 901 E. Cary St. Building The 901 E. building, a historical gem, stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of the 19th century. Constructed in 1845, this edifice was originally designed to serve the medical department of Hampden-Sydney College.
The college was established in 1827 by the British government, with the aim of training medical professionals in Egypt. The college was initially located in Cairo, but due to its rapid growth, it moved to a larger facility in Alexandria. The new building was designed by renowned architects and featured state-of-the-art facilities. The college offered a comprehensive curriculum, including lectures, practical training, and research opportunities.
