Daily Hampshire Gazette – New design standards in works for downtown Amherst , workshops start Friday ##

The town is seeking to create a cohesive and attractive downtown that will encourage economic growth and attract new residents. The design standards will address a range of issues, including pedestrian safety, accessibility, parking, and aesthetics. The new standards will be based on the town’s existing design guidelines, but will be more comprehensive and specific. They will also be informed by feedback from residents, businesses, and other stakeholders. The design standards will be implemented gradually, starting with the new five-story building and then expanding to other properties in the downtown area.

** A community visioning session will be held in the high school cafeteria at 9 a.m. the following day. Interactive activities will be used to refine the community’s vision of how downtown can remain vibrant, welcoming and sustainable. Refreshments will be served.

These standards will be developed in collaboration with stakeholders, including local residents, businesses, and city officials. The proposal also outlined a comprehensive plan for the public realm, encompassing a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing the public space and fostering a sense of community.
