The Concept and Design
A Blend of Sustainability and Local Character
The Beulah project is a mixed-use development that combines 44 residences with two curated ground-floor retail spaces. The design aims to seamlessly integrate with the local Fitzroy character, while incorporating innovative sustainable features. The project’s focus on sustainability is reflected in its use of natural materials, energy-efficient systems, and a net-zero energy design. The building’s façade is clad in a combination of natural materials, including timber, brick, and stone, which not only provide insulation but also create a unique visual identity for the building. The use of solar panels and a rooftop garden helps to reduce the building’s carbon footprint and create a green oasis in the heart of the city. The building’s energy-efficient systems, including a high-performance glazing system and a heat recovery ventilation system, minimize energy consumption and reduce waste.
A Collaborative Approach to Design
The Beulah project is a testament to the power of collaboration in design. Breathe Architecture has worked closely with the local community to ensure that the project meets the needs and expectations of the residents and businesses. The design process involved extensive consultation and engagement with stakeholders, including local residents, businesses, and community groups. The project’s design has been influenced by the local Fitzroy character, with a focus on creating a building that is contextual and responsive to its surroundings. The use of natural materials and sustainable features has been carefully considered to minimize the building’s impact on the environment.
The building will be designed to be net-zero energy, with a focus on sustainability and minimizing environmental impact.
Sustainable Design Principles
The building’s design is guided by a set of sustainable design principles that prioritize the well-being of both residents and the environment. These principles include:
Net-Zero Energy Design
The building will be designed to be net-zero energy, meaning that it will produce as much energy as it consumes over the course of a year.
The podium is topped with a cantilevered roof, providing ample space for outdoor living and entertainment. The cantilevered roof is supported by slender steel columns, adding a touch of modernity to the façade.
The Design Inspiration
The design of Breathe has been influenced by the surrounding area, which is known for its historic Victorian and Edwardian architecture. The building’s façade is a nod to the past, with a three-level brick podium that pays homage to the suburb’s heritage character.
